Based on AND inspired by the Wendigo of Native American/American Indian folklore overall, I presume? 
It was actually based on a really creepy short story called “The Quiet Boy” by Nick Antosca, but yeah this is very much focused on the Wendigo, which is a really cool creature in Algonquin mythology.
