Microsoft really needs to cultivate a better library for Xbox, instead of relying on those few IPs and treating everything else half-assed. Sony has done a far better job attracting third-party support and many different audiences, and it’s embarrassing to think but Nintendo is already going to have a significantly more robust first-party selection for their console than Xbox does by the end of the year.
This, I hardly touched my xbox the last four months, and boy, did I love touching my xbox…
But Nintendo just completely drew me in with the Switch, its still the company that made gaming fun when I was a kid, its so ingrained in their way of creating games, its just polished and fun as heck, and rarely does a game score far below an 8 (out of 10).
They have a great game in Zelda (Skyrim is one of my all time favorites, but Zelda creates a world without the glitches, rare loadtimes, less messy UI, etc, but still the same kind of fun, and hell, even shield surfing!), Arms and Splatoon are both really diverse and fun multiplayer games, they released a ‘Deluxe’ version of Mario kart 8, which I hadnt llayed yet, so that is another awesome game with 48 tracks + 8 battle stages ![]()
And now next week comes Mario & Rabbids (from Ubisoft to be fair) which I am really looking forward to! The intro animation looks like a pixar movie and the ingame graphics mirror the style awesomely and its an X-Com like game, whats not to love! Then next month Pokken Deluxe (same as Mario Kart, but didnt have a WiiU, so new to me), then in oktober we have Fire Emblem Warriors (love me a mussou (sp?) game once in a while and this one lookes really polished with cell shaded ‘clear’ style) and off course Mario Odyssey which claimed best of gamescon award just last week and well…when was the last bad main Mario game, metacritic shows most mario games at the 95% mark. Around the holidays we are getting Xenoblade Chronicles 2, which as a series so far has been wonderful, better than Final Fantasy has been in years anyway…
Next year:
A Kirby game and a Yoshi game, probably decent fun platformers with well known mascotts, which my wife will probably love playing with me, or perhaps my daughter who turns 4 then.
A new official mainline Fire Emblem, never played the games, but looking forward to a tactical rpg, but also by now a pretty well known name in the game industry (also well played nintendo with the phone game, to reach the masses).
Perhaps a mainline Pokemon and Metroid Prime 4, and who knows how many games they havent announced yet, then there is the possibility of a virtual console launch aswell…
Also, some of the best indies turn up on there, PORTABLE, and I’ve really gotten a taste for them being a busy parent.
So, what does Microsoft have to counter that? Sure they have a lot of third party Nintendo probably wont get. Assassins Creed looks nice, but I am already burned out on the series to be honest, Call of Duty? The same…
Some games like the new game from the Witcher devs, interests me, as does Red Dead Redemption 2, and probably some others, so I’m not doing away with my Xbox, but it has seriously lost my interest. Which started with:
- Fable Legends cancellation.
- Halo 5 didnt grab me as it should have (no split screen).
- Gears of War didnt really like the robot enemy and couldnt get into horde mode like the previous games.
Scalebound cancellation. - Forza? Looks awesome and will try Forza 5 when its free with games with gold next month, but racing games only amuse me for a few hours…
Sea of Thieves I’m interested in, although I keep missing my window to try the Alpha which I am in (because I’m on my Switch most times to be honest, or reading a book, or anything else most likely, because, like I said, the xbox sadly lost my interest).
The biggest bright spots of the Xbox One for me where Killer Instinct (give me that season 4 and you are forgiven Microsoft), the remaster of Skyrim (a remaster for crying out loud) and the Witcher 3, also being able to watch Netflix, which I can now do on my new fancy tv ![]()
They had a hellish launch, for which I blame Don Mattrick, and they never really recovered.
Ok, this rant went on longer than expected, I just hate having been this disappointed with a system, the Switch just giving me so much joy in such a short time, just really made me see that…
Man there’s quite a few games I’m holding off on buying currently because they’re getting ported Switch later this year, like Enter the Dungeon and Hollow Knight. The portability appeal is real.
Exactly, waiting for those aswell…there are even indies I would buy AGAIN on Switch, because of it.
Really hoping darkest dungeon gets a Switch port, devs tweet positive feelings about it, but no conformation ![]()
Yeah, I’m a bit bummed from Gamescom and my spider-sense is tingling that there’s more KI behind the scenes that we know of, so I would personally be thrilled to have something to look forward to Killer Instinct related or otherwise from Microsoft Game Studios.
I’m a massive Rare fan, so having to wait years after Sea of Thieves was announced is so painful, (although Rare Replay is great!), and I just want more from MGS. The games they publish are always so polished, unique, and all-around fun, so it’s a ■■■■ shame to see the promise of new titles shrink down to a trickle.
I’m playing through Resident Evil 6 on my Xbox One, and I’ll probably get 7 shortly after I wrap up 6. I’ll go back & finally play through the completed version of ReCore when that’s available too, but other than that, I would be only too happy to learn that something big is coming to the KI universe soon!
I don’t care for the sales conjecture, but I think it says something that Killer Instinct not only survived, but thrived since its Xbox One launch. Other “games as a platform” games like Project Spark and Fable Legends fizzled out before their prime, but it just earlier this summer when Mira & Kim Wu appeared in an ad alongside Spider-Man! We’ve got the comic next month, the 4K update, 3.9 update, the Steam release, whatever cool thing that the bonus Kilgore funds went to, as well as more Gold Skin Packs, and that leads me to believe that KI still has plenty going on behind the scenes, but I want to get hyped for it! This is my slowest year for gaming in a very long time!
Please @developers, tease us with something! Killer Instinct is the best game on the Xbox One, and your millions of players want to hear that there’s something around the corner. Thanks for being awesome, KI Crew! FIGHT ON!

It’s more than fair to say MS have dropped the ball majorly this cycle. As you say Nintendo with a new console out this year will soon dwarf the Xbox exclusives.
But they’re not interested in first party stuff. They want the best looking multi platform games cause they think that will bring people in. Wrong!!
I used to think Phil Spencer had his head screwed on about it but recently I don’t think so. Look at all the cancellations and the crackdown 3 fiasco. As for KI we’re in limbo again not knowing what’s happening. Injustice 2 is the main reason I switch the x1 on for lately and the only thing coming this year I want is super luckys tale. I’ve zero interest in player unknown battleground whatever and state of decay
Forgot about this one, absolutely loved the first one, its really the only zombie game I like outside of some of the better Resident Evil games. I believe it will be a big hit, still, not a lot of promotion for a game series that has been promoted to AAA status, and I fear it might underperform because of it…
Not sure if this is worth launching a new thread over, but I’d like to point out how the KI logo on the Kilgore, Shin Hisako, & Eagle theme singles all have a new red and white color scheme, as opposed to the purple, green, and shiny metallic silvers seen in Season 3.X. I might be looking a little too deeply into it, but could that mean that we’re going back to a red color scheme soon?
Maybe it’s nothing, maybe I’m Eagle-eyed. Stay tuned? ![]()

Love the post. All we know of as of now is they are releasing a 4K version for X (really just the PC version) which isn’t really a major update. I too was hoping for a Season 4 announcement but there is concern on my end that the game is over. I really hope not though. KI has been one of my return to games for this gen. Really hope it keeps getting new content.
great post @lago407. i am completely comfortable waiting for them.. as long as they take their time, cross examine EVERY thought, and continue to work hard, im sure they will come up with something that will BLOW YOUR MIND!! hopefully i can help ease the situation by saying ’ i am confident they will make a brand new game.. they will get rid of seasons, cause that made A BUNCH of people angry.. i think they will release the game in full… add a few modes (tag team would be very choice). and release dlc characters throughout its life.. i would not waste time with a SEASON 4… just delays the thinking process of the new KI.. they will probably just keep adding a few things here and there, to keep the game alive and well… which is financially brilliant!! wont cost a lot of cash to keep it moderately upgraded, for whats left of the games’ life.. As far as when we get to know more about whats next..? it doesnt matter to me.. we still need gold skins, terror skins, accessories, visual effects tweeks for this game.. im not done with ki 1 yet.. im sure they have everything all lined up, organized in a neat folder somewhere… all the while the 'think tanks are all over the plans for the new game… dont panic!!! EVERYTHINGS BEAUTIFUL!!! ( this is NOT FACTUAL, just an educated opinion).
cant confirm, but i believe you’ll have to check the ‘gross’ profit… not sure where to look that up even.. but the ‘gross’ profit will include EVERYTHING PURCHASED… characters, skins.. dlc content… etc..
It may just be coincidence, but if that’s the color theme they’re going for in the future of KI I very much like where this is go in. It looks sleek and punchy. I’m having happy thoughts imagining what a Season4/New KI interface will look like ![]()
KI 2013 is in the hands of its players and various communities at this point, if you ask me.
The whole ‘____ is dead’ bit is irritating. I swear, i though UMvC3 was supposidly dead as far back as 2014 if you listened to the most vocal of opinions. Right now, whatever comes of KI’s future with this build past 3.9 is in our hands. I believe KI can stand on it’s own two feet against most fighting games out right now with someone that’s new to the genre, or even some veterans.
The steam release, to me, is the chance to hit a big, bold ‘reset’ button on the game’s perception and it can go well or go poor. Like i said, i believe the game can stand up against most. A potentially fresh wave of players are gonna get to check it out and mix with communities that have different views on the game.
So yeah, if you ask me, it’s out of their hands and in ours.
Prince is dead.
Well this took a dark turn.
Nintendo has always had a good first party because they are their own developer for their own system. However, the challenges that they are facing is with being sued with the screen (switch) and also the wii remote. So I question the switch right now. Who knows, maybe MS just doesn’t want to give up their plans on game titles just yet. Because you know the scorpio has the ps4 fanboy’s trolling baaad. I hope that MS with flip the switch on the switch and the PS4. Because they haven’t played all the cards yet.
I agree on this. I think Steam release should go along with Season 4 in some form to get people interested.
PC ports of KOF or GG games always come much later and they are pretty much dead on arrival. I fear Steam port of KI will share this fate unless there will be some nice goodies coming along the release.
KI has advantage over most of current fighting games in form of crazy character designs. MK, SF, Tekken, 95% of this games’ characters are humans. If we REALLY went with this wendigo, lovecraftian, sharkman and other crazy ideas, we would really have something that they don’t and earn Steam’s community curiosity.
Sure, but I’ve been pretty loyal to the xbox brand, gaming only on an xbox console since the original one with the huge Duke controller. I’m brand loyal to a fault most of the time, MS is simply losing me with their strategy. I bought a Switch, BECAUSE I hardly played my xbox anymore, and it turns out I had more fun with the Switch the last 5 months then I did the last 5 years with Xbox (exceptions made for Ki and Witcher 3).
I’m still planning on getting the Xbox One X, mostly for third party games like red dead redemption, but it says a lot that my most looked forward to game for xbox is Cuphead…
If they dont turn things around in the next year or 2 I mind end up dropping the xbox altogether…
Nothing I’ve seen on the x1x has convinced me to part with my x1. MS haven’t done a thing lately to try and keep me as a consumer.
I also got the switch and there’s many more exclusive games coming out for it than the x1.
I just don’t know if Microsoft want exclusive games, they just want to be known as visual tarts lately.
Buy an x1x it’ll look prettier than the others but play exactly the same.
