Once again this sordid and rather silly debate that seems to become reincarnated every time there is a BBS refresh, is unfortunately back.
Graphics make a pretty presentation, but they don’t automatically make a great game. I know people who are addicted my Mine Craft, and yet it looks like it could have fit right nicely on a PS1. Whereas Final Fantasy 13, of which still looks amazing by even today’s standards is highly regarded as one of the worse FF games in history.
While technophiles are always going to want bigger badder, prettier, shinier things, 90% of the rest of gamers just want a good game.
A game doesn’t have to have 1 trillion polygons to be amazing… Look at Ori and the Blind Forest. It’s beautiful, but if you were to judge it on its graphics alone, it’s not going to have the same appeal as, let’s say, the newest CoD game or Destiny.
It’s not about the graphics, but how those graphics are used. I love KI’s esthetics and every character looks fine to me, because I’m not focused on how many polygons are in TJ Combo’s left shoulder, but kicking the other player’s a double s. I would complain if bad animation hindered gameplay, but with KI it isn’t the case.
Great games are a sum of many parts, not just graphics. The graphics, humble or epic, if done correctly are there to enhance the presentation and allow the gamer to… well… play the game. This is why Mine Craft sells millions of copies, despite looking like a PS1 reject. The low res characters and game models, allow the player to stack an endless sea of bricks and at the same time gives it that retro charm.
The reality is, as a gamer we’re always going to have gripes. There is always going to be something we don’t like. That is a fact. You may not be able to see Sabrewulf’s fur become matted as he’s soaked in sweat and blood as he fights, or have perfect 3D renders of every folical of TJ Combo’s chest hair, but at the end of the day… who freaking cares. KI’s graphics do EXACTLY what they are designed to do… play… the… freaking… game.
I’ve never lost a fight because I was distracted by Maya’s bobble head.
