About Killer Instinct's "tone" - Serious or Not?

I am now right in the middle just like you there

I’m just gonna start by saying that I understand we’ve only seen Rash’s Retro. His new skin may change my mind, but these are my thoughts right now.

The game is a trope-fest for sure. The issue I have, is that it’s filled with horror and action movie tropes, and that’s where I think Rash is a step too far. I don’t think the Hanna-Barbera style of his moves fit the game’s overall tone. It is funny to watch and to imagine this gigantic toad kicking people in the face with an oversized cleat.

I’m a sucker when it comes cartoons and old school games. Currently, I just have a hard time with his current state.

All that being said, I won’t drop the game because he’s in it. I love Hisako, Riptor, Aganos, and Spinal, and I love this game. The last 2D fighter I played was MK3U. KI is the one 2D fighter for me.

Thanks @xCrimsonLegendx for making this thread with a nice simple poll. The polls aren’t scientific, but at least they provide some grounding in reality instead of asking people to just sift through the same 3-4 people posting over and over again arguing both sides of an issue.

I think it’s impossible to call the original KI anything but goofy when you have fatalities like Orchid’s death by bewb flash and Jago’s meditation followed by a car falling on the opponent’s head. This doesn’t mean the game wasn’t ā€œdark,ā€ but it was more Beetlejuice than The Dark Knight. The second game might be a little less obviously goofy, but it is also less ā€œdark.ā€ Both literally, in terms of the art style (you see brighter colors and more daylight stages) and in terms of the overall tone. KI 2013 continues that trend, in my opinion.

People seem to want to make this all about Rash. Rash is a guest character, transported in from an 8-bit dimension. He is lovingly crafted to resemble another game - so the idea that he will mesh seamlessly in KI is a bit naĆÆve. No guest character I’ve ever seen fits seamlessly with the fictional universe of a fighting game (actually, there are plenty of normal cast members who don’t seem to fit - Dhalsim, anyone?). But they can fit into the fighting engine, and I think Rash does that very well. Ironically, if you look at the Battletoads Arcade game it is arguably much more gorey than anything KI ever did. So, granted, Rash is a cartoon character but the game he is pulled from is at least as ā€œadultā€ as KI.

Both? Black humor i guess. Google it.

Don’t get me wrong I’d like KI to remain somewhat dark and serious in tone, but it can also have a sense of humor. A character like Rash is pretty goofy, but to me he just looks awesome and is just a fun character and he’s about as 90s as retro Jago’s ripped pants.

listen what Cinder has to say after he wins a fight. You might have the answer.

It’s kind of the same as MKX, yeah the story and gore is brooding, but it’s also meant to be cheesy, ridiculous and entertaining. In this game, it’s even more on the cheesy side.

KI is like the Frank Zappa of FGs.

Tongue planted firmly in cheek, while spitting veiled diatribes.

Pretty much this.

It’s a game, so it should never be taken too seriously. To me it has both the ā€œdark, brooding, gloomyā€ aesthetic with humor splashed all over the place and that’s a good thing. People that want ā€œseriousā€ should stick to news and non-fiction books instead of games.

Where’s the half and half option?

I originally intended to get a black and white two response result. Without a bunch of extra options to pollute the final numbers, most people lean more towards one or the other but I understand where you’re coming from. Personally I believe the game is more parody but it has hints of seriousness so I went with the parody option off the poll.
