I would like to introduce you to various (not too classic) Japanese anime in this thread one by one.
I don’t know about recent anime but there are some classics which have wonderful characters that would definitely fit KI world. Bottomline great for inspiration.

This anime movie really look amazing, maybe I’ll watch someday. But I can’t watch anime without eng sub because I’m deaf.
I grew up with the original film featuring D. 
It was so good, I bought the sequel, which you’ve featured above, which is also fantastic. 
I shall check if there is a subtitled version on the net. No promises, though.
