Why do some of you guys only learn one fighter or one style in fighting games?

I disagree with everything you say to a point. People who focus exclusively on one character tend to master that character at a much higher level than those that try to use everyone.

While being a jack of all trades opens doors for more fighters for you to play, it ultimately limits your skill level.

It’s always good to learn the basics of all the characters, as it helps you learn their strengths and weaknesses.

I main Sadira and only Sadira and because of my singular focus, I can do things with her that most regulars can’t.

Like Everyone says. Character loyalty of preference. Like even though I’ve tried everyone, Jago is the one that I feel more of a connection to. I know for Season 3, Kim Wu will be my new main. Why, if she isn’t even out yet? Because I have a connection with that character since KI 2, Same as Jago.

My favorite characters are back/forward so I enjoy Sabrewulf, TJ, and Riptor. As someone who is a casual fighting fan I prefer to spend more time on just a few characters, although in this game I have played as everyone and can at least beat medium AI with all of them with no issue. I’m starting to get into hard AI and can do so without issue at least with Sabrewulf now. Going forward I will focus on a couple characters as I venture into online mode in hopes that I can at least do decently if I know the character well enough, but my time with each character should help understand them a bit more.

Because IG made Aganos. Period. Seriously, best character ever … for me. I used to be die hard Orchid from s1 till when Aganos dropped. Even though I lost a ton of matches at the start (I still do now, but i’m getting better) there’s something about going through everything a character has and knocking them through walls … repeatedly during a match. Smh just thinking about it! The Hype!!! That’s why I stick with Aganos. This character is worth all the blood, sweat, and tears you need for successful KI play. But all characters in this game are freaking great and are really fun to be honest. It’s just … the walls … In the words of TJ Combo - “think about it”

I don’t want to find out that I’m better with another character that I don’t like as much. Then I would have more reason to avoid my bad matchups rather than persevere through them to get better.

It does hold me back too, since playing another character would give me a different perspective and build upon skills that aren’t needed to play Aganos.

I know this topic is months old, but I wanna go ahead and say that I mainly stick with Hisako because I was attracted to her looks and playstyle.

I’m more of an observer of my opponents, I don’t really have to play a character to know their ins and out. Most of the characters in the game don’t appeal to me.

I am technically a character specialist.
Though I have a pocket jago for those certain match ups Hisako can’t handle.

Did I play you in ranked last night?

I agree with you man. (I just saw this in the latest thread). Even if ppl don’t play with other characters, they should use them to learn different playstyles and general knowledge of the game.

Well Kim Wu has a parry in Season 3.

Maybe you can give her a shot. You might like her.

Yeah I did play you. You played aganos and that match pissed me the hell off.

We really should play more.

Only thing I really disagree with is the people who say that learning one character and spending all of your time with them will make you better with that character than playing everyone. I play every single character in the roster and I can tell you that I have completely outmatched some people with a certain character who have only played with that character. There’s absolutely no logic why someone would be much better while only studying that character. They can go deeper into frame data, juggles, and setups? Well so can I. The only limit is time.

Back when I used to play Starcraft I was of the mindset that you needed to just focus your muscle memory and strategies into one of the three factions. It would always amaze me how all of the pros in that game could pick up any of the factions and stomp a semi-pro with an off-faction that they don’t use in tourneys. I believe the only true way to get better at matchups now is to be able to go back and forth so that you can truly comprehend every facet of what each player is experiencing. And beyond that, this goes miles towards your enjoyment of the e-sports element of the game. Back in Starcraft, I always tuned out whenever my own faction wasn’t playing in a match because I just didn’t understand what was going on at a high level when the other two factions fought each other. The same applies to watching high level play in KI when your character is not being used, which is going to be very often. Being able to comprehend high level play because you’ve stepped in every character’s shoes is very enjoyable.

Some characters make my fingers wanna snap off, pure and simple. There is a disconnect between some fighter’s style, in my brain, and my fingers.

u cant learn everyone at master level. Some people are not satisfied with knowing many characters on medium level so they main their favourite.

Oh I didn’t play with the rock last night. I was jago. Remember the set on kim wu stage?

I completely disagree, and so does 90% of the pros. It isn’t logical nor for most of us feesible to put the same time into the entire cast, versus just one character. When KI first came out even Max talked about one mainers and how the level of play with that one character is far beyond what you normally face.

When I look at the best of the best of KI playership, they all play well with just about everybody, but when they choose their main your life is gonna end.

I totally get where you’re coming from, as it is important that you have working knowledge of the entire cast. Not even attempting to use any other character will handicap you.

Also note, there is more to play than just character knowledge… such as fundamentals. If a player has bad fundamentals, they could spend their entire life with one character and still suck. I beaten a number of people like this.

Oh I thought you also played Aganos. I can never remember peoples name. Yeah my Jago isnt astounding, should have fought you with Hisako.

I played the golem last night…

Nobody is saying to master all of the chars. But if you just pick up one char, don’t bother learning the basics of anyone else, and expect to be really good at the game, you’re just thinking foolishly.

It’s preference… There isn’t a right or wrong way really. Everyone goes about things differently.

It’s certainly an excellent way to learn and it’s something I do myself, if I’m really struggling with a MU in a game, I’ll start playing that character a little bit and get a feel for them, but others may just lab the MU until they figure it out. I think one of the big differences in ‘good’ vs ‘decent’ players is an understanding of how to actually use the lab to work through things they have trouble with or just need to know how to deal with.

Actually Max is a perfect example of what I’m talking about. The dood can pick random and completely destroy 90% of the playerbase with a character he hasn’t even used for two months. By playing every single character you develop a great deal of fundamentals. This is also why the pros can play every character very well. I never said to spend an exactly equal amount of time on everyone. You can still have your mains but it’s very helpful to branch out and learn the in’s and out’s of everything the game has to offer.
