Star Wars Rogue One - Spoilers Allowed

Feel free to discuss your thought once you’ve seen it.

As I live under a rock myself, I just found out Rogue One hits today.
Anyhoo, I bought tickets and I will see it six hours from now in a movie theater here in Tokyo. Also, I just saw “a” trailer for the first time and none of the characters (actors/actresses) speak to my imagination, so I go in with low expectations

Spoilers, Darth Vader is Luke’s father!

Okay, seen it. Liked it. Definitely battle heavy. If you’re more into story than action then it might not be for you. Hopefully, others will share their thoughts soon.

I was completely blown away by this. I don’t want to post spoilers but whoever wrote this movie really loves Star Wars.

It didn’t have much character development for the main characters, but the movie itself had some really deep messages. It’s like a 1960’s WWII movie where the rebels are the French resistance and they have to go take out a gun so the allies can land on a beach.

I really found it to be compelling. There’s some exploration of the idea of what it would really be like to rebel against an all powerful galactic empire. You’re going to have to be ruthless and mean and people are going to die. And the way they show just how close to failure the capture of the Death Star plans was and how this movie ties immediately into A New Hope actually gives the events of that movie more weight.

I went in with middling expectations and I came out floored.

I had a day to digest the movie and the more I think about it the more I liked it. You’re right on character development but it doesn’t hurt the movie imho.
Oh and, Rogue One came across as pretty mature to me. It felt less “kiddy” for some reason, likely due to its plot.

Yeah, and without spoiling too much for anyone there’s not a “happily ever after” for our protagonists here either. The happy ending doesn’t come until the end of Episode IV.

I saw it. - EVERYBODY DIES!

Not everybody. Princess Leia and Grand Moff Tarkin both survive. Along with Darth Vader, Mon Mothma and many others…

Oh, I know. I was just referring to the primary cast. Besides Tarkin and Leia weren’t even real.

I only hated one part. The joke that Vader made when choking that guy. I want to smack who ever wrote that line, and the people who wanted to keep it in the movie.

Now Vader’s last few minutes were something truly special.

You forgot about the 2 criminals that die in the canteena. The one that says he is a wanted man to Luke in IV.

I told my Son to watch and see that it would end on the ship that is the start of the next one.

I love how they showed how the Empire was growing, and that it was more of a focus to the 2 groups instead of just the Skywalker family.

“You’ve got to be kidding! I am blind!”

I  so, so hard…

They did a nice job on Tarkin, but the Leia CG looked nasty. The would have been better off just using a wax figure, or just have her keep her back to the screen with someone else in the white robe.

Neither passed the uncanny valley IMO, but Tarkin nailed the persona.

I tend to agree, although Tarkin had way more screen time to develop his character. I think it would have passed muster as a reflection in the window if they left it at that, and I think both representations were really darn good. But they don’t blend seemlessly.

but Leia’s line at the end of the movie is super important, so I don’t know if they could have managed it well without showing her face.

They could’ve done it with a partial, llike from the side or something.

darth vader in the hallway scene was the best moment in the entire movie

That’s a pretty impactful scene for sure. Vader throughout the trilogy was intended to be ominous just because of his presence. Since it’s not 1977 anymore it sure helps a modern audience to show a bit more what it is people are afraid of.

Even knowing the outcome I found that scene to be masterful and tense.

i also like how director krennic died killed by his own ambitions

I just saw it tonight… and to say I LOVED it would be an understatement. The CG Leia and Tarkin were definitely hanging a little too close to X-men territory (uncanny), and Yeah, that Vader choke quote was a bit cheesy, but the hallway sequence…man, that scene just nearly erased the whiny crybaby Anikin imprint left on Vader from the prequels and firmly placed him back in the running for biggest movie badass of all time. That shot where he shoved his lightsaber through a rebel and the door behind him and then the door and the rebel slid off to the side…man that was some cold-blooded Sith right there.
