So, I would like to ask you, what special meter mechanic do you think is the best of the game? And the most fun to play? You can vote in this two polls and explain why!
Some considerations:
-The special meter mechanic must have some short of visual indication, either in a special meter(Like Aganos’ Chunks or Hisako’s Warth meter), or modeled ingame(Cinder’s fire up mechanic, Spinal’s Skulls)
-It has to be avaible without instinct(Feral cancels have an indication of when are ready, but they are avaible only during instinct; Annihilation is only avaible with full instinct)
-The special meter mechanic must not be regular shadow moves, so Gargos’ minions are not considered. Fulgore, Shago and Omen’s mechanics are unique ways to use shadow meter or extra meter, not shadow moves with unique properties, so it’s different.
-To valorate each mechanic strenght, all uses must be considered. So for example, Aganos chunks has several uses: Projectile, armor, walls, and peacemaker.
There are two polls: One for the best in terms of gameplay, and other about the most fun to play
Best special meter mechanic
Call of the Sky Dashes(Thunder)
Skulls(Spinal)
Reactor meter(Fulgore)
Surge moves(Shadow Jago)
Temperance and Vengeance meter(Maya)
Sand Traps(Kan-Ra)
Extra shadow bar meter(Omen)
Payload Chunks(Aganos)
Warth(Hisako)
Fire up(Cinder)
Drone assist and body switch(Aria)
Dragons(Kim Wu)
Energy shield, Grenades and Carbine shots(Arbiter)
As for the polls, I think Mira’s is likely the most potent. Giving up (recoverable!) snippets of life for stupidly powerful tools is very often underrated by, well, scrubs, bluntly.
I don’t really use special meter characters, aside from putting time into Mira and Shago and Kim Wu. I picked dragons for most fun meter mechanic on a whim, but honestly I think it might be a contender for most powerful, too. I think Kim Wu is a weak character with an extremely powerful meter mechanic. I could be wrong, the stuff I think is strong here could be reasonably stuffable, but it seems like even a single dragon can net you things like a safe full-screen wind kick into three or so frame traps and/or high/low/throw mixups, often converting into a short combo or throw to get that dragon back. It’s very buttonsy – you’re pressing 8 buttons in a second, especially if you don’t like the macro buttons, so I can see why casuals hate it – but I had a lot of fun doing this stuff when I had it down.
But then again, I also think Mira’s mechanic is a lot of fun and has tons and tons and tons and tons of undiscovered play to it, so maybe I should’ve picked it for the fun category too.
I don’t play at a high level, so I might come at this a bit if a different way. For most of these characters you need their meter mechanic for optimal play, but you can actually play them in a basic and solid way without it. The exceptions to me are Hisako’s wrath (although you can play her without knowing you are using it), spinal’s skulls, Fulgore’s pips, Aganos’s chunks and Mira’s blood. So I voted for Mira’s blood because it’s reallythe meter mechanic that defines the character. Mira without that mechanic is nothing at all- while even those other four characters could see major changes or the loss of their meter mechanic and still have at least some of their essence intact. I’m sure plenty will disagree with this statement so have at it.
For fun (@Dayv0 “funnier” means more laughable, so I think you’re going for “more fun” here), I accidentally hit Hisako because I’m all thumbs this morning. If I could go back and redo it I would probably pick Aganos’s chunks. I don’t play Aganos’s but even playing against him this is a mechanic that completely changes the same and although armor has been done in other games I think his mechanic is pretty unique.
I voted temperance & vengeance for most fun, not for the pip aspect but simply because neutral tools that you have to physically keep track of and can be separated from are very interesting and make maya a very unique character.
Best mechanics IMO:
-Fulgore’s reactor meter(Pip cancelling, hype beam, potentially forbids the opponent from jumping…)
-Mira’s blood damage(A lot of applications, versatile, best in class damage, big rewards…)
-Kim’s Dragons(big rewards, makes her safer, can lead to huge damage…)
Honorable mentions: Arbiter’s weaponry and Aria’s drones and body switching
Most fun mechanics IMO:
-Aganos’ chunks
-Eyedol’s stances and meter
-Aria’s drones and body switching
Honorable mention: Mira’s blood damage and Kan-Ra’s sand traps
I chose Spinal’s skulls for best because they’re not that hard to get and they seriously make him so much more dangerous with ALL of his specials, on top of giving him the ability to do run cancels, and mess with people during instinct when they bounce, while also locking out his opponent’s shadow meter. Just yesterday, I tried to hit a Spinal player with Fulgore’s hyper beam while I was in instinct, but because I was cursed, I couldn’t get the 1 last pip I needed to do it, so he won. It was then that I learned the power of those skulls.
As for fun, I’m naturally biased towards Aganos’ chunks. Using them for armor to ignore most of your opponent’s attacks, shooting them out to stun your opponent or destroy most other projectiles, or putting up walls for massive damage setups, to gain near full-screen reach with the peacemaker, or to limit your opponent’s escape options all adds up to the most fun and unique resource character I’ve ever seen in a FG anywhere…
I pretend his name is Finer Silver, but with a severe allergy to vowels.
Best is a difficult one. I went with Wrath, I don’t really have a justification for it. She gets options that I enjoy playing with. But I voted for Payload chunks as the most fun coz I get to put people through walls with a single punch, who doesn’t enjoy that?
Also, as a pure mathematician, I have an allergy to numbers and would never add such disgusting glyphs to the end of a username to pass a uniqueness check. I’m okay with vowels but something had to go.
I can sympathize. I’m Dayvo everywhere, but someone got it on xbox, so I went for Dayv0, which is similar enough(some people even fail to notice the change)
I think Maya has the best designed meter mechanics in-game to date
but Kim has the most fun and potentially the most dangerous with her dragon meter mechanics
Joanna will have the ultimate meter mechanics ever lol
