Ki13!

Hello all! Was just wondering what are the best ways to become good and the most accomplished you can be at Killer Instinct 2013(any tips and advice please!)? I’m fairly new to the 2013 reboot considering it came out a while ago, I was a pretty accomplished Killer Instinct Gold player and good at the SNES and arcade versions of the original Killer Instinct, the 2013 remake/reboot(whats the preferred term anyway?!) is slightly different to play though, easier to play in many ways, but in being easier to play I feel it looses some of the originals charms and therefore means lesser skill sets and skills are needed to play unlike the classic iterations of Killer Instinct which brought in a slightly complicated but fresh(especially for the time) combat and combo system that was for me anyway a revelation at the time, it was truly unique and revolutionary, it revolutionised the fighting game genre and fighting games in general ever since really, speaking of which did anyone play Killer Instinct 2 arcade much? I never really got in to that one, I played it once at the arcade when it came out I think, I found it too complicated to play, quite a lot more complicated than the original Killer Instinct arcade version and I didn’t go back for more, but now I’m wondering if its worth a retry and replay and would like to no what people thought of it and think of it now?!

Like I said any advice and tips on Killer Instinct in general would be most welcome and much appreciated, I’m thoroughly enjoying getting back into this classic, but I do feel I need some serious practice etc to get the most from it and out of it also, back to it then, lol, so, stay safe and peace out! Bye for now then! Safe!

Welcome to the forums, InstinctiveKiller0! Always cool to meet a fellow KI fan on here, especially one who has an appreciation for the originals.

So, my best advice would be to use the Dojo mode, as it is an incredibly helpful feature that shows you not only all of the intricacies of the combat system, but it also teaches you a lot about fighting games in general. If there is a preferred character in particular that you want to play, I think my best advice would be to test the character’s moves out in practice mode just to get a general feel, see what works, what doesn’t, what sort of tactics you can accomplish with said-character etc. Maybe keep an eye on the differences in terms of the moves and frame data of said-moves. You should also familiarize yourself with the Shadow Counter and Counter Breaker system as well, as those will definitely be significant and useful tools to use in a given match.

KI2, I’d probably use the same recommendation of using practice mode and keeping an eye on certain frames of animation during the fights. One of the things I noticed is that some moves would have invincibility frames that are very useful in terms of dodging projectiles, so it’s all a matter of timing. You should also familiarize yourself with the Counter system in that game and try to focus on when to use said-counters as well.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for that, all of that was helpful, I played it a lot a few months back, on a slight break now, probably will give it another crack at some point soon, I pretty much played it straight for a few months really, I really got into the Shadow Lords game option, I think that’s a nice touch, other than a few niggles I thought it was quite an interesting way of playing the game, it’s good for practice also, yes i’ve found a few favourite characters and honed them, I need more practice though, but I’ve got the basics down I think, any advice and tips for massive combos? That’s what I’m into, I love chaining them all together with linkers and enders etc, brings back memories from the arcades, it is easier to play than the classics, but thats no bad thing really, I’d rather it was easier like this than rock hard any day, I found KI2 quite tricky to play actually, no way near as pick up and playable as the original versions I thought anyway, I didn’t stick with it though so it may be due a revisit, thanks again, safe!

No prob!

I think it’s all just a matter of experimentation and practice. KI2013 is definitely more accessible compared to the originals, although they do follow the same principles of open-linker-ender type combinations. The Counter Breaker and Shadow Breaker systems are great additions to that and really add some interesting nuance to the combat mechanics imo.
