Choosing a Main

I was able to wrangle my brother to come visit me for a couple of days. I learned a couple of things. First, fighting games are much more enjoyable face to face. We had some good laughs and taunts and felt like we were teenagers again. Well, you know, until the kids came to see what was going on.

Secondly, I am not as good as I think I am. Lol. I have been playing KI off and on for 2 years. I thought I had a bit of it down. I know combos and openers and finishers and of course my favorite rub salt in the wound move, the ultimate combo. Turns out my base game needs work. Sure, opening up with a combo is good, connecting good, finishing is definitely a good thing too. But knowing when to hit with a single or couple fast ones or jump or even block. Yeah, that is kind of important too. It turns out that I suffer from in your face aggressiveness. It cost me several games to someone who was just learning how to push the buttons.

All I have to say is it was fun and served me right. Oh sure, I got a couple nearly perfect victories in there. But is that really worth bragging over when they’re new and the next game you lost because you didn’t think blocking was a good idea?

My other problem is I cannot seem to pick a main and stick with it. How do you guys choose one or two and get good with them when there is so many to like for different reasons?

I started with Thunder back in the arcades, still like him. I love Sabrewulf’s aggressiveness and fast rushing attacks. I’ve always had a soft spot for Combo, in part due to the name TJ and in part because boxing is cool. Glacius with his ice moves, of course, is just fun. Cinder when you’re feeling rather hot headed and bold. I enjoy Rash a lot. What can I say, I’m a fan of Battletoads. Fulgore for when I’m feeling like playing a metal Predator and you really can’t go wrong with Jago. So yes, I like a lot of the cast and cannot seem to pick just one or two. I guess I could buckle down and force myself to. And if I want to get competitive at some point I will think I would have to.

Can’t really tell, for me picking a main is almost like falling in love, well,to a lesser degree.
KI was easy since I’ve never changed it. But for instance in SFV I’m having troubles. Tho I enjoy Karin a lot her playstyle and tenko motions/confirms are kinda difficult. But I might need more practice tbh.
Then in Darkstalkers I went with Gallon first but ended up with Jedah because he was 100% cool and also enjoyed his weird playstyle (Gargos reminds me of him). In KoF 2k1 k9999 (Tetsou guy) was very good for begginers but in KoF2k2 I enjoyed Chris rushdown game a lot,he became my most powerful character in the team.
Marvel vs Capcom was easy, I loved Captain Commando, nothing to add.
In short, I will go for a character I find visually interesting and then if their playstyle is fine with me then thats the one.

Good evening!
I believe that affinity can be the missing link for you to choose your main character. Something more in your character ends up attracting him to you, either by the ease in using it, or in some goals that your character brings in his story, which can also please you.
Most of the time, the main character can be chosen by these factors.
In my case, I chose Fulgore as my main character, by affinity. I knew the game for an image of him in game magazines of the time, and he was the first character I used in KI 1 Arcade, and I learned to play with him in the other versions of the game too.
One piece of advice is to see what character you play best, and whether you like it. After choosing by affinity your main character, it is dedication and drills to improve your game and do your best in KI. I wish you good luck in your choice!

You have good taste. I love his KI 1 and 2 versions better. New one is cool, but do you remember his KI2 pose and cinematics with the lightning stike? Oh My ! I was totally in love with that character, lol

If you’re having trouble picking a main, sometimes the best strategy is to NOT pick a main right away. Choosing a character based on what other people recommend will only get you so far, and eventually you’ll feel fatigue trying ANY character.

IMO, just keep hopping around the roster and trying new things until something clicks. It’s somewhat indescribable. You’ll just… KNOW when a character is the right fit for what you want. This way, you can get more general experience with all the characters, which can lead to better matchup knowledge and a more in depth choice of main later on, as well as better understanding of the game and how it works.

Even pro players go through a character crisis or find a new love once in a while, so there’s nothing wrong with not picking a top Character or even a top 3 just yet!

Pick whichever character visually connects with you the most. then see if their playstyle connects with your play style. If they both meet your check list then stick with that character as your main.

I would recommend Wulf, Thunder, Rash or Glacius out of the ones you mentioned. Cinder, TJ, and Fulgore can t be a bit more on the technical side of what you listed as your weaknesses.
But most importantly who do you have the most fun playing with? Who gives you the best opportunity to win and have fun?

I man Omen because he represents what I like, heavy metal, Horror, Evil, Demons, ect… and his play style matches what I enjoy.

lol, in a new game everybody wants me to play their character. I get their feeling!, but that’s not how it works with me.

I play Sadira simply because she’s hot. I only got good with her because of how much time I’ve spent with her.

To be honest, there isn’t a right, wrong, exact philosophy to choosing a main. Some people excel at learning several characters and prefer to not be a specialist. There is advantages to using several characters at a competitive level. So in that respect that there is nothing wrong with not having a specific main. There are benefits to maining one character though, as a specialist will generally use that character at a much higher level of play than somebody who doesn’t.

For me, I purchased an Xbox One and KI just play as Sabrewulf, and I was a Sabre main for the first 6 months of my KI life. Then I started play with the other characters, and I saw Max use Sadira and then I tried her. From that moment, I was in love. I liked Sadira because she was beautiful, she was mobile, and more importantly she was fun. I haven’t looked back since.

See, I have to disagree with a couple of you here. Sadira is not hot or beautiful and can never be. No one that closely associated with spiders could be. She is second only to Hisako for those fighters that I take special enjoyment in beating over and over again. Riptor is a third, but that is just an old grudge surfacing.

I still have not chosen a main. And I came to a realization that there is no rush. I am a casual player. Sure I want to get better, but I am enjoying the game as I am playing it just fine. If I want to switch every so often, then I might as well. Maybe if I ever decide to go online and get competitive I will take it more seriously.

I did see that according to my playtimes it is Thunder, Wulf, and Combo. And that seems to be fairly consistent for who I gravitate towards.

Lots of good feedback though. It has definitely made me take a closer look at my current game and how to improve, even if it is just slightly. Seems to be a pretty good group on here.

Funny side note, my 4 year old wanted to play. She played tekken 7 the other day and I forgot to change it off of very hard. She still won a couple games by button mashing. She played KI on very hard, this time on purpose, and couldn’t knock the AI past the first bar. She still had a blast, of course. I just thought that was kind of interesting.

I’m not sure if you are a competitive player or not. But If you aren’t then there is no need to pick a main. Look at it this way. If playing with more than one character is fun and cool to you just do it. You don’t have to be this really cool kick ■■■ player unless it’s a career for you. I just recently played some fighting games with some friends, and I have found that kicking someones ■■■ is only fun if its hard. However losing means you have someone who can beat you. Meaning it make the experience more challenging and fun. If you still feel the need to find a main just go for whoever would be your favorite based on character design, story, and gameplay.
