An idea for a season 4 story theme: a new KI tournament

This was just an idea that I’ve had, but what if the theme for season 4 is something KI so far hasn’t had story-wise: a tournament. I mean sure a few characters have a back story of being in a previous tourney, but as of this game there really hasn’t been one. And there could be a couple of key features that could come from it as well:

  1. A traditional arcade ladder…which needs to happen regardless.
  2. Online tournament brackets, held similarly to lobbies, but would select 16 to 30 players and have them each fight their own matches and as they progress it connects you to your next player & so on. Also would be good to have various types such as single or double elimination, etc.
  3. Shadow tournaments perhaps?

Anyway that was just a thought.

Wasn’t S1 technically the tournament? I choices you have would be cool as extra modes, but I dunno if it’s worth a actual story mode for. Especially considering the crap the characters have gone through in the previous seasons story-wise (we stopped a full scale invasion people). I believe S3 is a good stopping place for the story. Leave the further story stuff for the sequel.

Eh, I was kinda thinking it’d be neat if they go along a similar path as Dragonball typically has. Have an adventure, do a tournament, save the world, do a tournament. I mean it wouldn’t be too far removed from what other FG’s stories do.

But as far as season 1 goes…I don’t know if it’s how it was intended, but the story didn’t really seem to revolve around a tournament at all, just characters doing stuff they would do while eluding to a greater design later…namely season 2’s story…which then carried over to season 3’s story.

If season 4 winds up being the final season, I could see a tourney being the PERFECT way to end the story of the current game.

From a story standpoint, I’d like to see something like this:

The heroes, Ultratech and Gargos have battled to a stalemate when the last of the Ichoriens returns in the form of an old sage. He makes a deal with Gargos:

They agree to hold a tournament. If Gargos, Omen, his mimics or anyone he’s turned to his side wins, the Ichorien will help Gargos pull Earth in to the Shadow Realm, where Gargos’ power there will allow him to corrupt the planet and bend all of humanity to his will.

But if the Ichorien, or any of the good guys win, Gargos will abandon his invasion and leave with his army of Omens and mimics.

So the set up would be this:

-Six new characters for season 4, bringing the total to 32.

-A new “Tournament Mode” that could be available online and offline as an arcade ladder. Graphically, it could show chart going from 32 to 16 to 8 to 4, to 2 and then perhaps a sub boss and then either Gargos if you’re a good guy and the Ichorien if you’re a bad guy.

-The story here could be intertwined with more a ton of new missions in the structure of a new chapter for Shadow Lords.

-Option to play Shadow Lords in tandem with Tournament mode or without.

-Two or three of the new stages for characters reflect a tournament atmosphere.

-Characters get endings that set up the next game.

Okay, so the idea may have made my imagination travel a bit, but all of this is more of a rough draft type way of saying that I’d absolutely love a tournament mode.

Interesting but isn’t that kinda stepping on MK territory?

Yeah, I’d say so. But that’s a bit of a tough nut to crack if you’re trying to have a tournament involving the invading forces of darkness from another realm fighting against a rag tag group of heroes for the fate of Earth.

That’s already baked in to the story, so I’d embrace the similarities in the basic premise while trying to take as many KI-centric left turns as possible.

Personally, I’d try and have a good amount of plot twists, surprises, back stabbing, background info, lore and really try and play up the fact that this is a dystopian future run by Ultratech and have that play in to the heroes, the villains, and how everyone interacts with one another.

Even if the premise is similar, I think that there’s more than enough that can be done to make it feel fresh and fun in this game universe.

It’s not just a MK thing. Street Fighter has done this as well…big tournament from fighters all over the world ran by a megalomaniacal villian bent on world domination. DBZ also does this, as mentioned earlier. it’s actually just a thing most fighting games tend to do, alternate between tournaments and wold-saving plots.

A new tournament would be nice.
